Snippet Library
Snippets that make WordPress easier for everyone to use: skip links, focus styles, better link text and fixes for common accessibility issues. For site owners who want a site that works with keyboards and screen readers.
After you save a post or page, shows a notice if the content has images without alt text, empty links, empty headings or skipped heading levels. Works with the block editor and the classic editor.
Adds an "A11y check" item to the admin bar on the front of the site. Clicking it outlines images without alt text, empty links and buttons, unlabeled fields and skipped headings on the current page and shows a count.
Adds Tools > Accessibility Report, which checks your published posts and pages for images without alt text, empty links, iframes without titles and skipped heading levels, and lists each problem with an edit link.
Adds a small floating accessibility button that opens a panel with larger text, high contrast, highlighted links, a readable font and a reset option. Choices are remembered on the visitor's device.
Gives numbered pagination links clear labels such as "Page 3" and names the pagination landmark "Posts pages", so screen reader users know what each link does.
Makes links inside posts and pages underlined, so they can be recognised without relying on color alone, as WCAG requires for links in text.
Adds hidden "(opens in a new tab)" text and a small icon to links in post content that open a new window, so screen reader and keyboard users are not surprised.
Gives menu links, pagination links, icon buttons and form controls a minimum 24 by 24 pixel tap area, the WCAG 2.2 target size minimum, without changing how they look.
Adds the post title as hidden text to "Read more" and "Continue reading" links, so screen reader users hear where each link goes instead of a list of identical links.
Adds aria-labels like "Previous post: Title" to the previous and next post links in classic themes, so screen readers announce where each link leads.
Adds aria-hidden to inline SVG icons that sit next to visible text inside links and buttons, so screen readers stop announcing meaningless graphic names.
Adds a "High contrast" checkbox to each user's profile that switches the dashboard to dark backgrounds, white text, yellow links and strong borders for that user only.
Adds aria-current="page" to any link on the page that points to the page being viewed, for menus, widget link lists and footer links that do not mark it themselves.
Gives links and buttons that contain only an icon an accessible name taken from their title attribute or the icon's label, so screen readers do not announce them as just "link" or "button".
Gives links in your content whose only content is an image with empty alt text an accessible name, using the title of the page they point to, so screen readers no longer announce just the URL.
Lists links whose text is "click here", "read more", "here" or a bare URL in the block editor's pre-publish panel, so authors can rewrite them to describe where they lead.
Removes tabindex values greater than zero from links and fields in post content, which otherwise force a confusing keyboard order, while keeping tabindex 0 and -1.
Strips title attributes from menu links when they only repeat the visible link text, which makes screen readers announce the same words twice.
Adds the file type and size, such as "(PDF, 2.4 MB)", after links to PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in your content, so visitors know what they are about to download.
Adds a small set of keyboard skip links (main content, main menu, search and footer) that appear on the first Tab press. Links whose target is missing on a page are removed automatically.
Makes the keyboard focus indicator in the WordPress dashboard thicker and higher-contrast on links, buttons, menus and form fields, so it is easy to see where you are.
Adds a "wp a11y-scan" command that checks published posts and pages for images without alt text, empty links, iframes without titles, positive tabindex and skipped heading levels, and prints a table you can export.
